This painting was inspired by my friend Alys (Culhane), author and horse trainer in Palmer, AK
Patron Saint of the Traveller
oil on panel
48" x 86"
2013

When my friend Alys gave me the manuscript of her memoir "Headwinds" to read, I thought I knew her life story. There was so much I didn't know about her childhood, and this, and my admiration for her indomitable spirit, gave me the impetus to create this work about Alys.

This work is also in homage to that pioneering spirit that drives explorers like Alys Culhane and her husband Pete Praetorius. They are soon to embark on the second half of their Continental Divide Trail Ride this summer.

The dog in this painting is a Great Dane named "Thunder", found on Petfinder.com.

This piece is a triptych.
